Melbourne design label Accessory Emergency, news, events, happenings, pop up markets, general rants

Melbourne design label, Accessory Emergency, news, events, happenings, pop up markets, melbourne design markets, design process.

Guiseppe Zannotti Boots, Proenza Schouler Clutch, and Cotemporary and Brutalist Jewellery is the current theme at Accessory Emergency Curated

Sarah Cole

Another few carefully chosen pieces have popped up on the Accessory Emergency curated pages, both modern and vintage pieces, in this day and age we are excited by the lack of rules in fashion and enabling true eclecticism and exploration’al looks that transcend time.

All of these pieces are vintage in some way, i’m looking at you Guiseppe Zanotti cowgirl boots, these are new old stock and have only ever been tried on, but never worn properly, so take them to their first rodeo (if you can, pending the end of respective lock-downs). It’s a great time to start dreaming and creating your first post lock down event look! Or have a pretend dress up session at home, hehehe!

Accessory Emergency Curated Some Beautifully unique pieces popped up this weekend

Brutalist modernist ring sterling silver with malachite cabochon, by MIR or MIRO ?
A$546.00

Beautiful statement vintage Brutalist, or modernist sterling silver ring design, highly sought after, a unique and bold example of the style, sterling silver with a cabochon malachite feature stone. Insignia reads MIR or MIRO. The malachite does have hairline cracks that is indicative the age of the piece but does not detract from the aesthetic. Very solid piece with no light-weighting in this piece , almost 40 grams of silver weight, this is not a modern take on Brutalist, it is original and of the period. Will fit size N-O. Plenty of bulk to resize and open up and make larger, ask your jeweler to assist or arrange through accessory emergency.

Please don’t ask about the Vintage Moroccan Zanere rug pictured with the ring, it is not for sale, sorry, not sorry!

Accessory Emergency - Made in Australia

Sarah Cole

We don’t bang on a about it too much but our products are Australian Made and designed in Melbourne.

To keep full control of quality and also keep things exciting we choose to manufacture locally usually in very limited numbers and often our fabric designs and statement neck-pieces are in “Only One” edition.

We try and focus on pieces that are muti-functionlal and can be integrated into many situations, office, holidays, parties , special occasions … our pieces work hard and eclipse frivolous fashion choices, and are fast becoming staple hero accessories and must have wardrobe pieces.

At the end of fast fashion, and with a positive global reset of the horizon, shouldn’t your accessories work harder for you?

Theres never been a better time to stay at home!

Sarah Cole

Covid -19 has affected us all unless your fortunate enough to have a truly self sufficient lifestyle on a remote island!

But i think there has really never been a better time to stay at home.

Delivery services on tap. With most of your favorite foods and booze, and some quite nice restaurants converting to home delivery in the current climate… support them if you can.

Music and media streaming, for all your indoor dancing and binge watching pursuits

VR - You Don’t really need to go out side any way

But do still go outside. It’s a great time to rediscover your local neighborhood with walking, running, scooting rollerskating around the block is still allowed!

Nurture your creativity. Tough times have often been energizing and polarizing for artists and designers and true creatives come out to play as imagination can not be constrained to 4 walls.

Industrial designers are in a great position to assist the medical and public communities with assisting in designing simple PPE equipment or putting your own home 3d printer to work by making a donating face shields and other medical equipment.

Weekly update 06-06-18

Sarah Cole

Inspired by the way algorithms and how different sequences might intersect with art  we devised a bit of an experiment  starting with the binary sequence , to see if translating some of those proportions into graphics would creating something beautiful, and we were pleasantly surprised.

It's pretty loose but and these have had some uniform scale applied to suit garment applications  we were getting some pretty good looking results. I'm thinking those super 70's colours are really giving it an8bit x kitchen tile effect mayan temple.

Travelling with a designer, it's irritating

Sarah Cole

Just doing some IT admin today and immediately got very distracted by these holiday pics taken back in 2012 and 2014 in Brussels and Barcelona , both of these beautiful cities  have an amazing concentration of unique architectural details and ceramic tiles, so i though it was time to share these little documents of a designers perspective , it drove my partner insane at the time,  stopping and taking pictures every few minutes , but hopefully with the fruits of this inspiration i have now  been forgiven ?

I just hate how sometimes people just want to obliterate and discard any evidence of perceived cringe worthy eras. I think that if its high quality its worth considering saving, even sometimes ugly is an aesthetic, or becomes beautiful over time?

Brussels / Bruxelles gorgeous  I'm going to go with 40's era MCM brutalist? style architectural window grill/screen. If only all security grills were this gorgeous.

Just an example of how irritating it can be when travelling with a designer , for this pic i waited for the sun to go down so the internal lighting shone through making it look lovely warm from the inside, only took 5 mins , but my partner was seething.

Egypt, Egypt, Egyption lover, couldn't resist :). Look at how this sand cast bronze handle has been hand painted, and look at this matching  pressed metal panels on the door,  such a beautiful way to secure you're property in the badlands of Brussels. It's really a gorgeous place but it does have a slightly harder edge than it's surrounding european capitols, however weirdly its actually one of those cities i'd consider moving to, even if fuze isn't what it used to be.

USING HTV FILMS TO CUSTOMISE accessory emergency DESIGNS

Sarah Cole

We have loads of fun in the studio with this bright colourful heat transfer vinyl, and our KNK MAXX die cutter.  It allows us to customise our graphics to fit reclaimed fabric swatches, and quickly create unique mockups and one off bespoke creations. We also recycle all the inbetweeny bits as it creates unique little hieroglyphic patternations. Like allot of the Accessory Emergency unique pieces, they are often created via unplanned  or surprise aesthetics which tend to reveal  themselves midprocess.

We’ve also integrated some beautifully coloured foil tranfers that we found at Resource Rescue last week (read lasts weeks news for details on our wonderfully fun visit).  Have a look at some of those metallics.

This matte yellow vinyl is looking fab against a wild Fluoro apricot 80’s fabric, had now idea how good it might look until I decided to lay some remnants on the table this morning.

It’s  such a happy day when all these good things culminate in a unique design, and as a creative it’s just really critical that you push through those darker times, as nothing ever stays the same for long when you’re unplanning creativity.

Our trip to Resource Rescue to source some reclaimed packaging materials.

Sarah Cole

In the struggle to fend of using ugly expensive and  polluting virgin packaging materials, we took a little trip to resource rescue in Bayswater.

It was super fun and we found lots of delightful sparkly colourful tapes, cardboard and wraps.

I know it looks like it’s for kids, but aren’t we all just giant kids at heart.

Not your typical packaging materials as resource rescue has sourced these items from industry, so it  seems like allot of the materials have come from the automotive and safety industry. That means you can look forward to some extra unique packaging in your next order.

It’s bussinesses like these that allow Accessory Emergency to consider an almost 100% switch to sustainable 0% footprint packaging materials.

It does tend to mean a little bit more work when designing our packaging, but it’s very satisfying and when intergrating these materials it becomes more like and art project than a dispatch as everything is non standard.

If your an artist, crafts person or have some little ones, a visit to Resource Rescue is a really unique and fun experience. Please allow yourself some time as well,  we went at 10:30 am and got out of there at 1:00pm.

Next on the  visit list is the Reverse Art Truck in Ringwood.

SPECIAL BAGS FOR OUR DJ FRIENDS

Sarah Cole

We love our DJ friends at Accessory Emergency, so we've decided to develop some very limited edition records bags, they are perfect for taking out with you for brunching and coffees, and the inevitable spot of record shopping. I know, you've told yourself no more, well, we all now that is just not true, so be prepared, save some trees, and embrace your obsession.

These very limited edition bags, well actually there are no 2 that are alike , so its really a bespoke AE curation, are completely guilt free  (made with all reclaimed fabrics) and double stitched to keep all your new and old vinyl purchases perfectly safe while you transition to your evening or overnight distractions, with a special pockie for all your other important bits (actually just more money for records, because we all know DJ's don't pay for there own drinks and disco supplies ;0).

We are just in the graphical phase at the moment, but we hope to release these unique pieces slowly over the next month or so.

DAILY MAGIC

Sarah Cole

Little bits of  design inspiration that catch you by surprise.

Look at these little patterns I caught reflecting of the studio wall , perfect and very Accessory Emergency, I tracked these little shadow patterns from out louvre windows this afternoon , very beautiful , thinking about how we can use them  out next design.

Its just a testiment to not being always in control and how that is not a bad thing as it leaves you open to these little moments in time that are truly beautiful and might never repeat in the same way again.

So take a sec to look around you, so cliche ,and enjoy, and I absolutely promise not to put this on a slogan t or insta post in a nuptials font , never ever .

ORDER THE TRIA TO HEX 3D PRINTED BANGLES DIRECT THROUGH OUR PRODUCTION PARTNERS SHAPEWAYS

Sarah Cole

Our preferred production partners Shapeways  can provide you with a direct service for the Tria to Hex bangles.

I believe these are  manufactured at the New York Production Facility however they may use a different production house depending on your location. We love the rest of the world to wear these stunning pieces of wrist architecture so we thought why not allow our customers to go direct to the source. The manufacturing is on demand so you can have exactly what you want , with a larger range of colours , and i believe a relatively quick turnaround time expedition with your choice  (5 days-2 weeks for a custom order i think is not too shabby).

The current bangle design is a round diameter of 66mm or 6.6 cms , this with suit a small to medium/hand wrist size , if you are uncertain simply check your existing bangle collection, please just make sure that you choose something with a round shape as oval like designs won't fit the same way.

Accessory Emergency is stocking hand dyed Black and Orange at the moment,  however Shapeways has a whole range of other Accessory Emergency approved hand dyed colour choices. So much fun

3D PRINTING IN HOUSE AND HOW IT HELPS ACCESSORY EMERGENCY DEVELOP BETTER DESIGNS

Sarah Cole

Yes! Accessory Emergency has its own prototyping robot, it’s a beautiful UP BOX  3D printer and it allows us to play around with ideas visually and mechanically before going to manufacturing.

It’s a great way to play and nut things out before proceeding to the next stage, manufacturing is fraught with little problems especially when your doing it yourself, but we've come up with quite a few proprietary solutions for things with the 3D printing process that we would have taken allot longer to discover without it, this is great because it means we have much less waste, more time, and have shelved many things simply because they didn't cut the mustard at the prototyping stages.

Check out these little experiments created with a 3d printed tool , and cast silicone, and also a silicone tool made from a 3D Printed master model.
